Do It Yourself! Why Not DIY Furniture?

Beautiful, handcrafted furniture is wonderful, no argument. But sometimes the money issue spurs us on to other-than-store-bought options...like DIY furniture....

Most of us get a hankering for change from time to time. Are you in one of those seasons now? Just thinking of the possibilities can get rather exciting, and debating about how you actually plan to renovate your living space can be downright exhilarating! (My 17 year old daughter Becca thinks I’m being so dramatic…)

Until you start adding up the costs…

New furnishings provide a refreshing feel, but might be hard on your pocketbook. Depending on the changes you want to make, cost is a noteworthy factor.  Will you alter window treatments? Wall paint? Odds and ends?

How about the elephant in the room? No elephant? How about furniture? No furniture either?! Plan your budget accordingly, and then jump in - DIY furniture!

Here’s where you’ll need some prudence. After all, we all know how easily purchases can spark a disturbance within our bank account and change the whole story from one of fun adventure – a three-hour tour – to wide-eyed incredulity – an uncharted isle!

Tools and materials are sometimes a nice chunk of that change, too (no pun intended), so unless you identify with Thurston Howell III, you’ll need to make tough choices to avert the storm. (I just dated myself, didn’t I… my bad.)

Then again, having dependable tools is worth the cost. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have shared that link above. :)

DIY furniture - a great alternative!

DIY furniture is a super way to go because it saves you money. But not only that, the hands-on work can be very enjoyable, and on top of that that, you feel a sense of pride each time you look at your creation.

And you should feel a sense of pride– making your own furniture is a real accomplishment! Your new DIY furniture serves as an addition to a room’s look, functionality, and ambience.

So on that note, let’s do it right. There are some timesaving shortcuts, of course, but for the most part, we want to stay away from (let’s see…how to stay Palletically Correct?) work-shy shortcuts that will ultimately undermine the value of your DIY possession, agreed?

DIY furniture recipes for success

A bookcase is an obvious storage solution for books, but more than that, it can serve as storage for toys, games, electronics, and collections. Shelving is a necessity in my home…. Through no fault of my own, I was born into a part of the world where a superabundance of things is the norm (this is a good statement to use when diverting blame for clutter).

Are you a product of the times, too? We seem to gather more than we know where to put. Well, shelving creates space to organize things you don’t want out in the open. Put those kinds of items into baskets, bins, and other containers and arrange them nicely in your new bookcase!

You’ll have more than a few positive upshots from the project we're about to share with you. In addition to the organization factor, bookcases have long been considered a furniture staple, and moreover, they tend to add a certain je-ne-sais-quoi to everything else around them.

Go here for some well-laid-out, comprehensive plans we found, for a do-it-yourself bookshelf. We think you'll find this a perfectly beautiful item for storage, as well as fun to build.

Follow Ana White’s recipe and good things will happen (found her, too! ...she and Rhonda seem to have a few things in common, although they've never met...). But before beginning any of the actual work, make sure you’ve got all the tools you’ll need handy.

Not only will you save yourself time, but you are more prone to be a pleasant DIYer. ;)

Speaking of a pleasant DIYer...

Absolutely not. You would pay the same for an item whether you found it by following our link or by surfing the net or using a search engine.
